Daniel Obasi has released another glaring fashion film – The Illegal. This time the film’s focus is on exploring sexuality, gender fluidity and non-conformity from a contemporary African perspective through fashion and fantasy.
The 5:25 minutes film looks into Nigeria’s LGBTQ community forced to hide their sexual orientation. The 2014 Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Act was signed in Nigeria and this legislation criminalises anyone participating in sexual acts, cohabiting relationships or marriage to an individual of the same sex.
The Illegal was shot mainly in Lagos Nigeria and directed by Daniel Obasi. The Illegal Project stylishly blurs gender binaries in its exploration of sexuality, fluidity and non-conformity. Infact models Daberechi UKoha-Kalu and Tobiloba Subomi are seen here as neither man nor woman, styled in such a way that presents the different layered stories of Nigerian identities.
