New store, new names! AKJP Collective has gone from presenting their collection on the runway of fashion weeks to opening their store. It’s not just any random store, it’s a concept store that comes seven months after their official launch set for the first winter season.
We’re told designers Keith Henning and Jody Paulsen new store is characterised by its ‘future-conscious creativity underpinned by solid design and craftsmanship’. It features about 15 emerging and established South African designers. “We have had enquiries from several new designers wanting to be part of the store and the Collective, so it was only natural to expand. We continue to select designers based on quality and originality, but having more does allow us to stock a greater variety as each has his or her own identity and style,” says Henning.
AKJP have their very exciting autumn/winter collection shown at SA Menswear Week in February in their new store including the 12 pieces shown at Pitti Uomo in Florence, Italy. The collection makes a great reference to art as it is a vibrant homage to Georgina Gratrix‘s art and impasto brushwork.
AKJP brings a diverse range of pieces in the collection. This includes new parka/raincoat that is in line with the designers’ current focus on outerwear made from jacquard, cashmere, silk, wool, cotton, mohair and impala leather. “A lot of work went into finding the right fabrics,” says Paulsen. The other designers participating in the collective are: Tamara Chérie founded by Tamara Chérie Dyson who won the 2014 ELLE Rising Star award. Her ready-towear designs are minimalist, putting the spotlight on the cut and fabrics – which include her trademark wool.
